Interview with Paula Do Nascimento, conducted by

Augusta Conchiglia — How do you regard the future of towns and cities in Africa?
Paula Do Nascimento — The urbanisation of the continent will speed up alongside rampant demographic growth, which is certainly cause for alarm. In Angola, there is a debate on the evolution of the city, driven by a new generation which is making environmental demands. Civic groups have also successfully opposed a number of architectural excesses imported from Dubai.•3 But such action is anecdotal. The debate does not really have an impact on the decision-makers or political parties, whose standardised vision of progress is inspired by Western urban models.
